Miso Extra shares her new EP, ‘MSG’, umami for the ears
ListenTrailblazing London-based, mixed heritage singer, rapper and producer Miso Extra has today shared her EP, ‘MSG’. Photo by Claryn Chong.
Earlier this week, the final Single from the EP, 50/50 was released, accompanied by an incredible animated video, directed by Taku Mikami, whom Miso discovered on Instagram through a Japan-based gallery she follows posting his work. In her words, “I fell in love with the moody colour palettes and animation style. I took a chance and reached out to ask if he would be interested in working on a video. When they said yes and came back with a treatment it felt like a no brainer. Taku has beautifully managed to weave in so many different references to the lyrics into the visuals. I honestly think this video is amazing!”
The EP, is charmingly described as “umami for the ears”. The tracks have set the airwaves alight, with multiple spins on BBC Radio 1 from Clara Amfo, Jack Saunders, Sian Eleri and Arielle Free, plus being added to the BBC 6 Music A List, and further support across BBC 1Xtra and Apple Music Radio.
There will also be a limited number of JCD (Japanese CD) formats available from 20th September, which will include the EP tracks ‘MSG’ and ‘Great Taste’. Fans can pre-order a copy from here – be quick, as they’re sure to become a collector’s item.
Speaking about the meaning behind the EP, Miso explains “MSG, the flavour enhancer found in all my favourite foods, is known as “Ajinomoto” in Japan, which means “essence of taste”. Therefore it felt an obvious choice that I call the EP that as a continuation of Great Taste, my last EP. MSG is made up of songs that carry on from where Great Taste left off. The songs explore my thoughts and observations of the world around me – the good, the bad and the tasty.”
